Hate Comes to Manchester, Tennessee

*This guest column is an exclusive first-hand account by one of the Muslim attendees/organizers of the “Public Discourse in a Diverse Society” forum, that was disrupted by anti-Islam hate groups in Manchester, TN.  Although this incident was widely reported on in various media, many outlets left out the depth of hate that was on display Tuesday evening.

Hate Comes to Manchester, Tennessee

In recent years, there has been an alarming surge in anti-Islam hate group activity in Tennessee, especially in areas such as Rutherford and Coffee Counties.  This virulent hate was fully on display Tuesday night at the “Public Discourse in a Diverse Society” forum in Manchester.

Since 2010, our community has seen a concerted effort being made to demonize the religion of Islam and its adherents, with hate groups from all over the nation using our state as a staging ground for spewing negative propaganda.  This includes the effort to block the construction of the Murfreesboro Mosque, to the faux-outrage created when an elected official mistook a mop-sink in the state legislature for a “Muslim foot-bath.” Legislators who have fallen under the influence of these groups introduced an “anti-Sharia bill,” which would have made the practice of Islam punishable by up to 20 years in prison.  Additionally, we have seen a normalization of increasingly violent rhetoric – such as a Facebook posting by Coffee County Commissioner Barry West, depicting a gun being pointed at Muslims.

Commissioner West’s posting “How to Wink at a Muslim” garnered national attention, due to the overt call to violence against a specific minority group.  Local Muslim groups such as the American Muslim Advisory Council (AMAC) and the American Center for Outreach (ACO) immediately asked West to issue an apology, due to the aggressive nature of the post in addition to Mr. West being a public official.  As this story went viral on social media, many key players in the Islamophobia industry latched themselves to the story, criticizing AMAC and ACO for demanding an apology.  Much to the chagrin of the anti-Islam groups, Mr. West issued an apology for his irresponsible post the next day.

Tuesday evening, the American Muslim Advisory Council hosted about “Public Disclosure in a Diverse Society” in Manchester, TN, as an open forum to discuss the dangerous effects of the rhetoric that was espoused by Mr. West in his post.  Those within well-funded Islamophobia Industry – such as Pamela Geller and Robert Spencer from the American Freedom Defense Initiative (AFDI) saw this as an ideal opportunity to fan the flames of hate in our back yard.  And while their so-called protest was done so under the guise of “defending free speech,” the reality is that the public is unaware of the nefarious affiliations of such groups.

Geller and Spencer and their organizations are listed by the Southern Poverty Law Center as “hate group leaders.”  They hold close affiliations with the English Defense League – a Neo-Nazi affiliated group that has employed violent tactics against the Muslim community in the UK.  Both Geller and Spencer were cited extensively (174 times between the two) in mass-murderer Anders Behring Breivik’s manifesto, which was written shortly before he murdered over 80 people in Norway.  To put it plainly, these individuals recognized widely as being extremists – therefore it is highly concerning that so many citizens of Tennessee have bought into their overt message of hate and bigotry.

Groups like the TN Eagle Forum and ACT for America (also listed as nativist and hate groups, respectively) called for thousands of their followers to come to this public forum to “stand up for their first amendment rights” that they claimed AMAC is trying to limit. These groups turned out people from all over Tennessee. Personally, I spoke with folks from Bristol, Sparta, Murfreesboro, Smyrna, and Tullahoma. They showed up in front of the Manchester Coffee County Conference Center hours before the forum. Geller and Spencer joined in around 5:30pm, ensuring the crowd was primed and riled up – including rhetoric that alluded to justifying violence.

After the outdoor protest, waves of people flooded the hall at 6:20pm.  All the seats were taken with in the first five minutes so people started to post up along the walls, near the doors, outside the doors, in the lobby, and all the way out to the entrance of the building.

The AMAC program had yet to begin, when Eagle Forum members (who also brought their own American flag) took it upon themselves to stand up and recite the “Pledge of Allegiance.”  Everyone else in the room, Eagle Forum member or not, joined them, for one of the most aggressive recitations of the Pledge that I’ve ever heard, followed by a long and loud applause.

At 6:30 pm, Zak Mohyuddin, an AMAC Board Member and long time resident of Coffee County, began the forum with an introduction to who and what AMAC is.

Before he could even get a sentence out, he was interrupted by a comment from the audience, “speak English!”

The panel continued as follows:

Zulfat Suara – AMAC Board Chair

Dorothy Zwayyed – AMAC East Tennessee Coordinator

Sabina Mohyuddin – AMAC Board Member and long time Coffee County resident

Bill Killian – U.S. Attorney DOJ Eastern District of Tennessee

Kenneth L. Moore – special agent in charge of the FBI’s Knoxville Division

Throughout the program, the speakers were plagued with interruptions, jeers and epithets being lobbed at them. Whenever examples of cooperation between the American Muslim community and law enforcement were highlighted, the crowd would yell, “Infiltrators,” Terrorists,” and “go home!

As a representative of the Muslim community who was participating in the forum, the words of hate that I heard spoken on this day are something that I will not forget for a long time.

As I stood up to gather index cards for the Q&A session, a man from the crowd said, “Watch out, she might blow up!”  – Which was met by rousing laughter, rather than disgust.

As one of the Muslim speakers from the event finished, another individual exclaimed “FINALLY!  Can we burn her at the stake now?” – which was also met by laughter and cheers.

When bullying and discrimination that kids face in schools was brought up, one woman yelled, “Leave our children out of this. They hate you.”

Finally, during a portion of the presentation – a picture of a mosque, which had been destroyed by arson, was shown.  Rather than responding with compassion, the hateful attendees responded with applause and cheers.

Although the goal of the forum was to foster dialog and positive engagement – it is clear that Geller, Spencer and the hate groups came to cause divisiveness and hate.  It is saddening that some Tennesseans have succumbed to this temptation, as it brings back dark memories from our nation’s past.  On a positive note, many in attendees from the community greeted us with goodwill and assured us that the haters do not represent them or the majority of people out there.  Though a small gesture, this helped end an otherwise tense night on a positive note.  As we move forward from this eye-opening evening – the hope is that Tennesseans will take the lead in denouncing and marginalizing these fringe groups, while fostering an environment of positivity and inclusion.

This is such an insightful article. However, It saddens me to see that grown adults can still act like children. They obviously came to disrupt the discussion so that there was no outcome of progression to meet at a middle ground. Hopefully, with time and paitience they will learn to be more accepting. In the mean time, keep your head up Drost and go educate them because ignorance stems from the lack of knowledge.

What do Muslims expect? The great sovereign State of Tennessee, located in good oh Dixie land, where the the racist president, Indian killer and slave holder, Andrew Jackson was born, and where the fine Christian terrorist organization was created, to maintain the purity of the White race, called the KKK, and of course don’t forget the genocide and mass terrorism that was perpetrated upon Native Americans, and Black West African slaves, many who were Muslims, and forced to abandoned their Islam, under the wipe, and take on the slave masters religion of Christianity; are not going to welcome Muslims, especially foreign Muslims with open arms!!!! “History can’t be changed, but hopefully hearts can be change in the future”!

VIDEO PROOF: of the haters applauding a hate crime.

For those anti-Islam haters claiming anything in the article was misrepresented, your blatant bigotry is all documented on film.
For those of you who applauded, you are shameful human beings.

  4. June 10, 2013 at 2:22 pm

Why are people so eager to hate? That’s all extremists on both sides of this understand, and that’s not what either Islam or Christianity is about.

Good Lord, how do these people sleep at night with such hate?

Peace and love to everyone. But especially to the loud and angry anti-Muslims who spewed hours of hatred in spectacle-fashion last Tuesday night in Manchester. They need it the most, as they clearly have no idea what it is….. Find peace, people. Find peace. Start by looking in the mirror and trying to love yourselves. Work hard at it. Then maybe from there—-one day—you can start to show love to others…….

I am proud of all the positive work that AMAC and other groups are doing to foster understanding and diversity in our community.
The small number of vocal hate mongers will get more loud and aggressive as their hate message gets harder to sell.
Keep up your good positive community work and forums and the fire they want to feed will be extinguished.

interesting to see the islamophobe commenter spam-brigade to be an international phenomenon. In germany /europe we have the same type of people:hyperventilating in front of the PC and spreading their “free speech” – nothing but hate.

you know as someone born here in Tennessee that has a christian mother and a Muslim father, you may have all the right to hate all you want. you not a follower of he bible, the bible never said hate people, but to love people. you are the follower of Satan, a spirit that’s full of hatred. there are people who are christian and they dislike the fact that people like you are disrespectful among the people within that religion. so basically you’re saying since “all muslims are terrorists,” what makes a white man that killed 23 people and the majority of those 23 people were kids. what about that guy back in the 90s with the Oklahoma bombing and he was a white man? what about the white guy who killed people in the Colorado movie theater? but no one said Christians were terrorists, so you can’t put a religion down because of poor decision making of people who follow the devil. Also, in the middle east you have christians, muslims, and jews……get the facts learn the regions, and please stop the arrogance………there’s a difference between a joke and racism, and these country people out there in Manchester, TN have been brain washed because of the media…….people need to stop watching the news unless it’s for weather or sports……because the rest of the stuff is garbage….

No one said anything here, in any comment about terrorism, ever. We are against ISLAM as an evil political cult that is radicalizing in every country and is not in any way cohesive with our ideals of free speech, personal freedoms, women’s rights, and we are FIGHTING like mad- not to have our cities burned down, sharia law implemented and our young girls brought into grooming gang prostitution- like we see in Europe. They were disarmed. Here we are not.

I found this article to be very informative and not entirely surprising. I have lived in this state for 60 years and have witnessed such sophomoric and ignorant behavior many times. Throughout history Christians have been driven to find security in their faith by denigrating and denouncing the faiths of others. As a Christian myself, I am thankful that I am secure enough in my own faith and belief that I don’t have to spend time “proving” that I am right. Interfaith groups have served to put me in touch with those whose beliefs are different from my own, but whom I have learned to honor and respect while not diluting my Christian beliefs one iota.

Unfortunately, the person who said “we have the right to offend you” is correct. But that right does not make you smart or well-informed. It just makes you offensive in a wider venue. So count me offended. I am offended that people have to be hurt by your silly behavior and your idiotic rantings. I am offended that civility is apparently beyond many of our fellow citizens these days. I am offended that the Christian faith, which when rightly practiced is hospitable and welcoming not only to other Christians, but to those of other faiths or no faith at all, is made to seem vengeful and justice averse. And as an aside, I am also offended by your bad grammar and atrocious spelling and punctuation, but that’s a subject for a whole different discussion.

So, keep the faith, Drost. And I’ll keep mine, and my prayer is that among those of good will bridges of friendship and tolerance will continue to be built in Tennessee and beyond.

People are not ‘hurt’ by free speech, as Anjem Choudary is free in England to spew muslim radicalization, hate for western democracy and sharia for England for a decade with no boundaries, while living off the generosity of the British people on welfare.($25,000 EUros a year, although he is a lawyer, he claims right to steal from the British taxpayer as Jizya-infidel tax and encourages others to do so)
People and their families are ACTUALLY Hurt, by a loved one being cut up and beheaded on the street in London. British, being accosted by muslim gangs for not wearing proper dress or being gay in muslim NO-GO Zones With appropriate signage saying BEWARE! Entering a Muslim Zone. Somali Grooming Gangs that target underage white girls for rape and prostitution. Having cities (Stockholm) burned to the ground by the ungrateful, towards those who took them in and gave them housing, food and funds.
      This is what really ‘HURTS’.
This is ‘tolerance’ to the point of suicide. People, of all and non faiths- did the right thing, and the effects we see in Europe is what they got in return.
So be offended by Free Speech against this if you like, but who is defending the innocent girls from honor killings, rape. Who is defending the rights of people to live in the West as we fought for freedoms and women’s rights and the right to speak out against injustice.

  13. June 8, 2013 at 3:59 am

I am fortunate enough to know the author as a kind, caring, compassionate human being who works tirelessly to improve the lives of many, not just Muslims. I admire her courage in speaking the truth and the courage of all Muslims who refuse to be intimidated by these actions. Those of us who support freedom of religion and acceptance of one another must speak up now more than ever.

I live in Murfreesboro where a controversy has been raging for the last two years over the construction of a new Islamic center. Before that, I didn’t know a single local Muslim. Now, through interfaith groups and outreach, I have made new friends and been accepted unquestioningly despite my agnosticism.

It is time to heal the hate and recognize that we are all one.

Thank you for your gripping first-hand account of this disastrous encounter with bigotry, Drost. 1 out of every 5 people on earth are Muslim. It’s not right or even accurate to conflate the actions of a fraction of 1% of Muslims with all Muslims. Islam is a monotheistic religion with much in common with the core American values and these voices do not speak for all Americans, just as the terrorists who abuse Islam, do not speak for all Muslims.

    • Sonja
      June 8, 2013 at 6:42 am

No one said a word about terrorism, although sometimes valid as well, not in need of a Black Out of discussion, since nothing should be.
When people are not in agreement with honor killings, stoning a rape victim, bagging women, cutting off limbs, hanging gays in public, death for apostasy and other Islamic teachings, all which you claim are somehow in common with ‘core american values’ ; we can beg to differ, AND reserve the right to SAY SO OUTLOUD. This is free speech and is protected as much as any Imam’s right to preach this ideology. We have fought long and hard for these rights, and aim to keep them. Special interests don’t get a pass from cold hard criticism of their ‘Core Values’. Is criticizing Judaism, Christianity or Scientology against the law? Is it Hate? No, it’s necessary in a sane world. Why is it only Hate when Islam is brought under the same scrutiny?

Great article Drost. The Muslim community in Nashville is so proud of you. Islam is a religion of tolerance and peace. It’s the second largest religion in the world for lots of good reasons. Allah taught us to be nice to all other religions and faiths. Unfortunately there are extreme radicals in every religion. Most of Muslims are peaceful and hard working people.

For those Christians who have posted this filth, your behavior is the antithesis of Christ-like behavior. Hateful people are a shame against the TN that we all know and love.

Yes, 500 years, since before Europeans got here. Ever hear of the Constitution of the Iroquois Nations, which the US Constitution took many components? Wow, you wanna tweet some dumb shit, you only show your own ignorance. You think 1776 was when this nation started? Wrong. Oh, I thought muslims were here before Columbus? isn’t that what those crazy imams teach? Then you would have known about the native population, you know, the ones that were here before anyone else.

    June 7, 2013 at 5:43 pm

Oh please. Trying to stop Islamic blasphemy laws – which go against the beliefs of billions of people – is NOT “Islamophobia.” What a disgusting JIHADI epithet.

You have no conscience or morality, apparently. Muslim INFIDELOPHOBIA is rampant, with non-Muslims being brutalized all over the world, and you complain about people speaking up for their freedoms not to be further brutalized.

How disgraceful. Now I hate Islam even more, because it utterly fails to produce honesty and morality.

Islamophobia is BULLSHITE. There is no such thing. There is only defense against Islam’s violence, bigotry and aggression.

  22. Sonja
    June 7, 2013 at 5:37 pm

Complete BS. Americans were standing up for free speech which we’ve had in this country for 500 years. We know Islam does not enjoy free speech, but here in the U.S. we are not subjects of Islam’s blasphemy laws under Sharia. We reserve the right to criticize any and all religions, Islam does not get a pass. This was what the protest was about.
This is not fringe, nor hate, it’s called the Constitution and we consider it sacrosanct.
While by the Constitution- people have freedom to worship freely-by the first amendment, they also have the right to tell the truth about any religion, what people are actually worshipping, what their holy books tell them to do and analyze these books for all the world to know exactly what they mean. The authorities were inferring that if people criticize Islam that it ‘might’ be against the law. this is completely ludicrous. Because muslims are constantly ‘offended’ and threaten violence for telling the truth about Islam, does not mean we shall back down on Freedom of Speech. We see what is happening in Europe and how the authorities have been cowed by cowardice and threats from muslims there. We refuse to go down that road here.

    June 7, 2013 at 2:15 pm

Wow speak about pulling facts out of the air and sticking them together to demonized people. This kokoye person didn’t even explain why people were upset. Their only reason? They hate us poor innocent Muslims. What bull! They wouldn’t have been so upset if they hadn’t been threatened. How dare a u.s official backed by Muslims sponsored by the Muslim brotherhood come into their city and threaten them with jail time if they said such truths as most terrorists are Muslim? If you want people from bad mouthing Islam, clean it up yourself. If I bitch at a neighbor for keeping trash in his yard do I have to go to jail? Can I not bitch at an ideology for raping kids and stoning women? If you do not want to be linked with such images, educate the people about the difference of your Islam with the Islam of the Islamists. Oh yeah! Also renounce sharia and swear to obey U.S law like any other citizen. Lets see if the members of the brotherhood would do such a thing.

As for hate. It’s incredible how much hatred you have of Tennessee. You must be a Tennesseeophobe or a truthophobe. How very racist of you to hate the people in Tennessee for their non extremist views. How much do you need to hate to link innocent people to a crazy mass murderer. So what is jihad?
The only thing I hear is…. Oh! You know it’s….. Complicated. Maybe for you with your limited intellectual capabilities. For me it’s simple. Killing innocent people=bad.

I agree totally with your last sentiment. The hope is that Muslims will take the lead in denouncing and marginalizing these Islamists, while fostering an environment of positivity and inclusion.

  26. June 7, 2013 at 1:13 pm

Oh WAAAAAAAA! You Muslims need to understand ONE thing – WE WILL NOT SUBMIT EVER and we will not allow your blasphemy laws in this country… We have freedom of speech and if you don’t like that – get the hell out of our country. How about if you people stop calling for the murder of Christians and Jews??? How about if you stop hanging homosexuals, or killing apostates, or stoning rape victims or molesting little boys or marrying little girls. Your ideology is vile and so 7th century. We will never stop fighting this crap so you can take your made up term of “Islamophobia” and shove it! A phobia is an irrational fear… nothing irrational about fearing the encroachment of this vile ideology.

I also was in attendance, and so much of what this woman says is false. This was not about you or muslims. This was about our rights as americans to be able to speak freely. There is no law that says we cant offend you. As americans you should also be standing up for free speech, whether you like that speech or not. I will tell you we are tired of you pushing your religiion down our throats. Practice your religion and go on with your life. I dont care that your a muslim. I also will say I sat behind this woman, and she agitated people as well. Get over yourselves and live like the rest of us

I just couldn’t shut my mouth, reading all this BS from all the haters of Islam, I just wanted to say this first of all, Islam is just the nectar ( if you allow me to use that word) of all the holly religions, we as Muslims, celebrate and practice all the activities of the previous religions, so hate all you want, you are only letting that hate to eat you inside out, and you are just hating on your selves and the other religions>
Now, as you said, ‘not all Moslems are terrorists but all terrorists are Moslems’ first of all, I don’t know whats moslems are, but if you meant Muslims, that the people who believe and practice Islam, if you said that, all the terrorists are Muslims, what do you call Timothy McVeigh, what do you call KKK who kills by the name of Christianity, what do you call the terrorist who killed people in the movies, and the little kids in schools, Muslims don’t do that, how ever some terrorist happen to be Muslims, yes the same way some terrorist happen to be Christians, Muslims didn’t start ww I or ww II, Muslims didnt kill millions and millions of Indian Americans, neither displaced millions and millions of African Americans and put them to slavery and used them for centuries, and killed them, Muslims don’t do that. I can go on and on, but I just want to say that, Islam is the solution, either you want or not, either you accept it or not.
